Detecting Failure of Seals

There are so many types of seals used for industrial and private purposes by professionals or even amateurs. When you use mixer seals or agitator seals, you might notice that sometimes they wear out. If you have been noticing bad performance of the sealers then it might be the failure.

How to Spot Seal Failure

If you want to learn more about detection of the failure of seals then go through the following list:

  • Chemical Degradation

Different types of seals like mixer seals or agitator seals are vulnerable to degradation such as blistering or discoloration. You might even notice cracks and flakes which eventually lead to the complete destruction. Such problems are problematic since they can lead to the early deterioration of the seal.

  • Compression Set

Another thing to look out for when you have agitator seals or other type of seals is the shape. If you notice that the seal has changed its shape and it is less circular then it has probably lost its usability. A flat or oval service is not repairable and you might need to look for new ones.

  • Thermal Degradation

For mixer seals, agitator seals and others, temperature plays an important role. Since seals are predominantly used with compressors, you can see the side effects of high temperature in form of radial cracks. You might also notice other negative impacts of high temperature on the seals such as shiny surface compared to matte one. This is important because shiny surface of agitator seals indicate that they have softened.

  • Extrusion

You can judge the failure of agitator seals by the chipping of the seals too. Other indications might be factors such as a ragged or nibbled surface. These are common signs that you need to change your seal. Moreover, if the extrusion gets worse, you might also notice that the surface of the seal is shaving off completely.

  • Abrasion

And lastly, you might notice abrasion of agitator seals, mixer seals etc. Due to abrasion you might see scrapes or loose particles of the seal. There are other signs of abrasion that you need to look out for too. For example, if there are grazed or scratched lines which run parallel in the same direction which your seal works, it is abrasion you are looking at.

Abrasion can also cause the mixer seals to wear out at extreme levels. You might facing things such as lacerations causing breakage to the seal.
